Views wanted on importance of extra Fishguard rail services

The Welsh Government is seeking views on the additional rail services between Fishguard and Carmarthen introduced in 2011 to assess their benefits and shape of future services.

Transport Minister Edwina Hart has asked local groups to carry out a survey about the differences the services have made to the local community and report findings in July.

Transport Minister Edwina Hart said: “I would encourage anyone with an interest in these rail services to have their say in this survey. It is important that local people have the opportunity to shape how rail services are delivered in their area.”

After agreeing to contribute to the review, Stephen Hale Chair of the North Pembrokeshire Transport Forum said: “The North Pembrokeshire Transport Forum is pleased to have been asked to carry out an evidence based review of the benefits provided by the additional train services to North Pembrokeshire. We want to find out how the increased accessibility to the area has helped tourism and how improved transport links have benefited residents for employment, educational and recreational purposes.”

The North Pembrokeshire Transport Forum will be working with Pembrokeshire County Council and the Fishguard Chamber of Trade and Tourism.

Jeremy Martineau Honorary Secretary of the Chamber of Trade and Tourism said: “Fishguard and Goodwick Chamber is pleased to be involved in providing evidence of the benefit of increased trains service, which has brought many visitors to our area by train over the three year trial period. We will be assessing and then reporting to the Minister the economic benefits, which we believe to be considerable.”

The surveys can be completed on the internet at: www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/haveyoursay by clicking on ‘Current Consultations’ and then ‘Fishguard Rail Services Survey’.

Alternatively, a paper copy of the survey can be requested by writing to or emailing:

Owen Roberts Transport Unit Pembrokeshire County Council County Hall Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire SA61 1TP.

Vitally important that we keep this service and increase it for the benefit of the tourist trade and for our own use. I know I have used the service and its made an enormous difference.

Keeping services at Withybush hospital is more important than keeping these services given the cost to benefit ratio and the false positives it brings to Fishguard and Pembrokeshire businesses that aren't being reported in a desperate attempt to keep rail in Fishguard. This has cost the taxpayer nearly 5m over 3 years which excludes amounts to local businesses. Yet another white elephant generated from school boy politics without proper consultation locally. 3 years later history is repeating itself with another lip service consultation. This is disgusting and quite frankly some of these budgets need realigning by WAG to support more priority issues.
