Get your costume ready! The Haverfordwest Walking Carnival sets off from Old Bridge Square this afternoon (Saturday).

The fancy dress theme is ‘Hollywood Heroes and Heroines’, but following requests from locals keen to pay tribute to greats from outside the world of showbiz, organisers will welcome heroes and heroines from any ‘walk’ of life.

Registration for Carnival entrants is at 12.30pm at Old Bridge Square, near County Sports. The procession sets off at 1pm, led by the Milford Haven Town Band.

Heading via Swan Square and Bridge Street to Castle Square, the party returns to the Riverside Shopping precinct, where the town Mayor and Sheriff will present cash prizes - donated by The Taj Mahal Restaurant - to the Best Individual and Best Group, plus a Runner Up.

Added attractions will include craft stalls, music from the Milford Haven Town Band and Haverfordwest ATC Band, excitement and colour from a troupe of Belly Dancers, and free children’s entertainments ranging from a bouncy castle to face painting and balloons. Several local charities will also be in attendance.

The Carnival is being jointly run by community group Haverfordwest at its Best and the Haverfordwest Lions Club, with financial support from Valero, Haverfordwest Town Council, and local traders. Riverside Shopping, Haverfordwest Lions Club and HIP will provide practical help on the day.

“We’re trying to bring some life and colour to our town centre, and hope that people will help us to do this by donning costumes and joining the parade,” said Sarah Llewellyn of Haverfordwest at its Best. “ Our procession route is wheelchair and pushchair friendly, and we’re looking forward to seeing some great carnival costumes.”
