HUNDREDS of people poured through the gates of Brawdy’s Cawdor Barracks on Saturday, as the base held its annual open day.

The14th Signal Regiment (Electronic Warfare) hosted the event which was raising money for the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity

Attractions included The Haverfordwest Skateramp Allstars, a BMX flatland display, the Savage Skills Mountain Bike Stunt Show, Icelandic horses, Pembrokeshire Falconry and the air cadets marching band.

Visitors could also test their target skills in the shooting range or try their hand at archery.

The highlight was the military capability displays. People crowded around the main arena to see the signals put through their paces.

Taking place over the same weekend was RAF Brawdy’s Big Reunion.

People from Pembrokeshire and further afield met up at the Duke of Edinburgh in Newgale on Friday night, before gathering at the open day on Saturday, where they were given a private tour of the base they used to be stationed at.

Among them was Barry Wood, who has fond memories of Brawdy.

He said “The old girl is a mere shadow of what she was like in my day (1976-78) on the hunter lines. The base still holds you in her breath and anyone that says different is a liar.

“As a grown man who hasn't been back since September, 1978 it brought what hair I have on the back of my neck to attention.”
