PLANS to merge two Milford Haven schools will go before county councillors next week.
On Thursday (October 20) councillors will vote on a recommendation to begin consultation into the closure of the Meads Infant and Nursery School and Milford Haven Junior School, and the establishment a new 3 to 11 years English medium primary school across both sites.
The director for children and schools is also recommending that the age range of St Francis Catholic Primary School be extended to admit part-time three-year-old pupils.
The proposals follow consultation earlier this year with parents, staff, governors and locals, and – in the case of St Francis’ – the Diocese of Menevia.
Pembrokeshire County Council hopes that the changes will alleviate the pressure on the Meads School - which is currently at 114 per cent occupancy for full-time students - and help fill spare places at St Francis’.
Last week, Preseli-Pembrokeshire MP Stephen Crabb called for improved facilities for the Meads School, which currently relies on several mobile classrooms to accommodate rising pupil nuumbers.
