People in Haverfordwest, Pembroke, and Pembroke Dock are among the first in Wales to benefit from the latest high-speed communications technology called ADSL.
The Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line transforms copper wires between a local telephone exchange and a customers socket into a high-speed digital line.
The technology is capable of download speeds of 10 to 40 times the speed of ordinary modems.
John Davies, BT director Wales, said: This is part of the most significant investment BT has made in Wales in a decade and places rural Wales at the heart of the information revolution.
It provides tremendous scope for the people of Pembroke, Pembroke Dock, and Haverfordwest to take maximum advantage of the business and lifestyle opportunities available.
Businesses in the area can now be as effective as any business in any part of the UK in their use of electronic commerce.
ADSL means getting information, education, and entertainment on-line will become as quick and easy as flicking through a magazine or changing TV channels.
It will enhance new wave series such as electronic commerce, high-speed internet access, video-conferencing, video on-demand, home shopping or banking, on-line education and information services.
The service will always be on with no need for lengthy dial-up processes and there are no call charges over and above the typical lowest monthly charge for the service currently available of £39.99.
The new service can be ordered by people served by the Pembroke and Haverfordwest exchanges now. Customers must be based no more than four kilometres from the BT exchanges and service is subject to satisfactory completion of a line test.
The technology has been made available thanks to investment, by BT, the Welsh Development Agency, Llwybr Pathway, and the European Regional Development Fund.
o A roadshow and seminar programme is being held in the grounds of the Hotel Mariners, Haverfordwest, until Friday.
