School flies the flag

JOHNSTON CP School has become only the second school in Pembrokeshire to be awarded the prestigious European Eco-Schools Green Flag.

It is the culmination of five years hard work by pupils and staff at the school - work that has demonstrated excellent environmental practice and sustainability.

The flag was raised for the first time on July 13th during a ceremony in the school grounds.

Earlier this year, Hayscastle Primary School became the first school in Pembrokeshire to receive a European Green Flag.

Pupils at Johnston participated on a school eco-committee to take action on litter, recycling, energy and water saving.

Projects undertaken included:

Developing a safe cycle route to school;

Setting up a school nature club to develop the conservation area in the school grounds;

Organising healthy eating weeks and a Tidy Up Johnston campaign. Gerry Taylor, Eco-Schools Officer for Wales, said: We were impressed with the level of knowledge of the pupils and their willingness to do their bit for the local environment.

Johnston Primary School has made the important link of local action to global awareness in their community.

We are pleased that Pembrokeshire has set an excellent example for others to follow.

At the flag-raising ceremony, guests were welcomed by the headteacher, Mr Mike Roberts, and they included the vice-chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Councillor Leslie Raymond, as well as the chairman of the school governors, County Councillor George Grey.

Councillor Raymond described the day as a special moment in the schools history.
