It was yet another great day for Pembrokeshire Triathlon Club at the Newtown Triathlon on Sunday, July 15th.
Five members of the club travelled up to compete in this well-run event, held over the sprint distances of 400m (swim), 25km (bike) and 5km (run).
This year the race also hosted the Welsh Sprint Championship, open to members of the Welsh Triathlon Association (WTA).
The three top male athletes from Pembrokeshire were all competing, leading to high expectations for a number of top places. The lads were not to disappoint, as Oliver Simon led the Pembrokeshire contingent home with a 2nd place finish, in a time of 1:04:13, just over two minutes down on winner David Haines.
Right behind him was Thomas Oggy Owen in third place in 1:05:34, and next home was Roger Devonald just under a minute further back in 1:06:23 and a fine fourth place.
Once WTA membership was taken into account, Oliver was crowned Welsh Sprint Champion for the third year running, and Roger scooped the runners up spot.
In the womens race Clair Davies put in another excellent performance, winning the Open Female competition in 1:15:03, and coming second woman overall. Newcomer Caroline Blair, obviously getting into the sport raced for the second weekend running, and did well with a time of 1:30:00 and 17th woman.
Forthcoming races in Wales include the Triple Super Sprint (Saturday, August 11th), Bro Ddyfi (Sunday, August 19th), Llanberis Half Ironman UK (Sunday, September 9th), Bala (Sunday. September 23rd) and Excalibur (Sunday, October 7th).
Anyone interested in triathlon is welcome to come and join the club at one of its training sessions, which cater for people of all abilities. Structured sessions are as follows: multi-storey car park in Haverfordwest for running on Tuesdays (7.20pm start); Haverfordwest Pool for swimming on Tuesdays (9pm start); and the Meads in Milford Haven for swimming on Thursdays (6.30pm start). Club members also organise a number of informal sessions during the week.
