The NFU has launched its annual competition to celebrate the massive contribution women make to farming.
The NFU/Natwest Wales Woman Farmer of the Year Competition is now in its fifth year and women involved in farming are being urged to enter. The competition has helped to raise the profile of women in the farming industry and to challenge the stereotype of a farmer as a man in a flat cap and wellies.
Women make a tremendous contribution to farming and we want to recognise that, explained Noel Morgan, of NatWest, the competition's sponsor. It never fails to amaze me how women involved in farming manage to accomplish so much. If not farmers in their own right, many have set up alternative enterprises if farm incomes have fallen. Others have made it their business to promote the industry by opening up their farms to schoolchildren, or taking a more active role politically.
Anyone interested in entering or nominating someone for the competition should contact the NFU at Swansea on (01792) 774848 for an application form.
The winner will receive £500 and the two runners up £100.
