Trust offers reward

THE National Trust is prepared to pay a substantial reward for the recovery of nearly £8,000 worth of equipment stolen from its Stackpole estate.

It is the second time in 18 months that thieves have targeted the estate. During this latest raid, an all-terrain vehicle bike and two trailers were taken from a locked compound. Ian Bennett, the Trusts head warden in South Pembrokeshire, is certain the thieves had a detailed knowledge of the estate. The bike had only arrived at Stackpole four days previously from the Trusts estate at Colby Woodland Garden.

Police suggest the equipment may have been stolen to order. This was premeditated. Bolt croppers were used to remove the bolt and it was put back in place to appear as if it hadnt been tampered with. They had probably been gone for some time before anyone noticed the bolt had been broken, said Mr Bennett.

The two trailers had been bought to replace two which were stolen from the same location 18 months ago. Security will now be a priority on the estate. A major reward will be given to anyone who provides information leading to the recovery of the equipment.

Both trailers - an Ivor Williams and a C.L.H. - have wire mesh ramps and the Yamaha Big Bear bike is green with panniers at the front and back. The theft has restricted work on the estate. The bike and trailers were an important part of our operations at both Stackpole and Colby Lodge. It is going to be very difficult to carry out our day-to-day maintenance without them, said Ian Bennett.
