Sandchurch builders set for beach contest

TOMORROW (Thursday) signals the launch of this year's Sand Church Contest organised by the St Davids Peninsula Tourist Association at Whitesands.

The popular competition will be judged by the Dean of St Davids, the Very Rev J. Wyn Evans, or his representative; Amanda Canby-Lewis, of Cadw, and a representative of the Western Telegraph, and the prizes of £25 in each of the four classes will be given by the Tourist Association (two) and by the Western Telegraph (two).

As in the past, the classes will be 1. Family, 2. Groups, 3. Disabled, 4, Children under seven.

There will be no entry charge and exhibitors can enter on the beach on the day, each being allocated a 15-feet square of sand from which and within which to build 'a religious structure of sand'. The church-building 'window' will open at low tide at 11 am and end at 3.30 pm, when the judging will take place.

The organisers are hoping for good weather to give the budding Christopher Wrens every chance to excel.

CAPTION: Flashback to 2000: Among last year's winners were the Arnold and Roberts families from Pembroke, whose fine entry was based on St Twynnell's Church. Pictured are Sophie, Liam and Kirsty Roberts and Claire, Matthew and Cara Arnold.
