Let's go fly a kite!

The sky's the limit for an innovative new event which is being launched in Pembrokeshire this month.

The first-ever Pembrokeshire Sky Festival, at Carew, will be an exciting two-day feast of fun for all the family, with the theme this year of kites and windmobiles.

The colourful festival features kite-making and kite-flying of all types - from newspaper kites, crafted by youngsters in on-site workshops, to the airborne antics of stunt and 3-D kites flown by professionals.

The Pembrokeshire Sky Festival is being co-ordinated by the Carew Historical Society, and will be held at Carew Control Tower and Airfield. The society is currently restoring the tower and interior equipment to its World War Two condition.

Funding has come from SPARC and the European Union Objective 5b programme and the Arts Council for Wales.

Said SPARC's community enterprise and training officer, Rachel Gibby: 'It was thought that a Sky Festival would be an ideal way to attract people to the area, and will also show the excellent work that has been done by the Carew Historical Society at the control tower.

Entrance to the event, which takes place on Saturday, August 18th and Sunday, August 19th, is free. Both days get underway at 11.30 am with a mass kite launch, and there will be workshops and demonstration kite flying throughout. Also seen will be RAF military box kites, historical kites and a display of large wind turbines, while the second day also features the presentation of prizes for various categories of kites flown during the weekend.

The Western Telegraph is among the sponsors for the Festival, along with SPARC, the Arts Council for Wales, Tesco, Stena Sealink, Irish Ferries, Barclays Bank, Folly Farm, Walk on Water, Manor House Wildlife and Leisure Park and Wales and West Trains.
