Girl survives horror plunge

A six-year-old girl narrowly escaped tragedy on Thursday night when the car she was seated in rolled over a 30 foot embankment, landing upside down in a stream.

Eloise Daniel was on holiday with her father, Dr John Daniel, and ten-year-old sister Sophie, at Ty Canol Camp Site in Newport. They had just come back from a day at Oakwood, when the incident occurred.

While Sophie was dropped off at the campsite toilets Dr Daniel parked the car next to their tent in the middle of the field. An eyewitness saw him get out and go round to help Eloise out of the car, but it began to roll forward. He made attempts to stop the car, but was thrown off as it picked up speed. He suffered a broken leg as he tried to stop the car in its tracks. Fortunately Eloise appeared to be unhurt.

The emergency services were called by other campers. Both coastguards and RAF Sea King helicopter were scrambled along with police, fire and ambulance, as first reports indicated that the car had gone over a cliff. Both father and daughter were taken by ambulance to Withybush Hospital for treatment.

On Monday Dr Daniels condition was described as satisfactory and confortable by a hospital spokesman. His daughter was not admitted.
