Aberystwyth's dominance continues

Aberystwyth was the venue for the seventh round of the Dale Sailing Longboat League Championship.

In the junior race three teams entered with the experienced team from Fishguard up against the two local teams from Aberystwyth racing against the clock around a course set in the estuary.

After a competitive race it was Fishguard who came out on top, followed by Aberystwyth A in second and Aberystwyth B in third.

In the ladies race with the sea conditions quite lively, it was Aberystwyth A in Greenstone, Llangwm A in Will o the Wasp and Newport in Carningli who set the pace to the first turn, as they pushed ahead of the remaining field of six boats.

At the turn it was Carningli who had pulled ahead of Greensome and Will o the Wasp, followed by Llangwm B in Tonnau. As they made their way back along the middle leg it was Aberystwyth who turned on the pressure against the leading boat Carningli, cutting down their lead to just one length by the final turn to the finish.

In a very exciting finish the Newport boat turned well at the buoy to pull away and cross the line first from Aberystwyth A in second and Llangwm A in third, followed by Llangwm B, Aberdyfi, Solva Vets, Aberystwyth B, Llangwm C and Solva A.

In the men's race it was the Aberystwyth A team who powered off the start to a four length lead from last week's winning team Solva A, who struggled to keep up as they approached the first turn set some two miles along the coast. Just behind it was the teams from Aberdyfi, Fishguard A and Aberystwyth B who were having their own battle.

As they headed towards the final turn the Aberystwyth A team turned on the power to consolidate their lead over Solva with the Aberdyfi boys holding on to third. They finished: Aberystwyth A 1st, Solva A 2nd, Aberdyfi 3rd followed by Fishguard A, Aberystwyth B, Newport B, Llangwm A, Solva B, Fishguard C and Aberystwyth Vets.

In the final race of the day 11 mixed teams got off to a good start with Llangwm A pulling ahead of Aberystwyth A and Newport B. By the turn Aberystwyth had taken the lead over Llangwm with Newport B dropping back to fourth from their clubmates, the A team.

As the boats made their way to the finish there was no catching Aberystwyth in a close finish just ahead of Llangwm A in second, Newport A third followed by Newport B, Llangwm B, Aberystwyth B, Llangwm C, Solva B, Aberdyfi, Solva A and Aberystwyth C.

The next League race will be at Little Haven on Sunday, August 12th at 11.30 am.
