Golf club's proposals scuppered by Park

A controversial plan by Newport Golf Club to build a new two-storey building containing six flats on the golf course was stymied by the planners on Monday.

Members of the Pembrokeshire National Park Authority's development control committee rubber stamped a recommendation of refusal by planning officials on the grounds that the development would be in breach of eight vital planning policies and result in new purpose-built tourism development in a prominent location in open countryside to the detriment of the special landscape character of the area.

The golf club had previously failed to implement planning consents granted in 1995 to enhance facilities and extend the course to 18 holes and only partially implemented a consent of 1998 which included an extension to the clubhouse and car park.

The committee was told that there were two letters of support from Newport Town Council and Nevern Community Council and two objections to a new building. The idea of the new development was to provide five flats for golfing holidays and one for managers accommodation.
