GCSE joy for pupils

GCSE results have been joyously received across the county, with pupils doing better than the national average in some subjects.

Their hard work was praised by headteachers in Pembrokeshire, along with strong recognition of parental support.

At Ysgol y Preseli, Crymych, the pass rate for A* to G grades was 100%, with the A* to C grade 79.2%.

'I'm very pleased - weve had excellent results,' said headteacher Mr Martin Lloyd. Individual results included Dylan John with 11 A* grades;

Jemma Collins with ten A* and one A; and Helen Paine with eight A* and three As.

Headteacher at Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest, Dr George Davies, said: 'The GCSE results this year are the best ever, with 67% A* to C grades and, most pleasingly, 99% of students gaining a qualification. There were seven pupils with all A* or A grades, and one pupil with 11 A* grades.

In Fishguard High School, A-levels were followed by an equally successful set of GCSE results.

'There has been a significant improvement from last year, with several pupils achieving straight As and A*s,' said headteacher Ms Christine Wright.

Over at Milford Haven School, there were a large number of outstanding results.

Mrs Pamela Munday said: 'The GSCEs were a shade down on last year, but the year group did better than expected. Nine pupils achieved at least nine As, including Marko Cosic, who gained nine A* and two As, Sam Williams with seven A* and two As, and Ben Stalbow and Victoria Pritchard who both got six A* and three As.'

At Greenhill School in Tenby headteacher Mr Chris Noble was delighted with the queue of pupils for sixth-form, saying it meant a lot of people managed to get what they needed.

'Although it hasnt topped our record of two years ago, we are very pleased. The results of those with five or more GCSEs with A* to C grades is 54 %. Just as important are the results for A* to G grades at 96%.'

At Ysgol Dyffryn Taf in Whitland, deputy headteacher Barry Childs said the GCSEs had been as good as the A-levels. Fiona Harrison gaining ten A* and two As; Angharrad Davies with six A* and five As; Catherine Scourfield with five A* and five As; and William Giles with five A* and three As.

In Pembroke School ten students gained five or more grade As, and three girls got nine A and A* grades. Many pupils were overjoyed, although headteacher Frank Ciccotti said there were also disappointments. However, results continue to go against the national trend as boys do as well as girls at the school.

At Tasker Milward School in Haverfordwest, headteacher Chris Jones said the results were the best the school has achieved.

'The five or more A* to C was 58% of the year group. We are delighted and had some excellent individual results.'

These included Kate Webster with 11 A* and one A; Robin Martin with nine A* and two As; Andrew Martin and Paul Hetherington who both got eight A* and two As; and Beth Kershaw with seven A* and three As.

At Cardigan Secondary School the overall success rate for the GCSE and GNVQ part one qualifications was 99.8%. Over 74% were in the A* to C range, with over 25% of grades in the A* or A grades.

In last week's A-level results at Ysgol Dyffryn Taf, Whitland, Lucy Perkins gained straight As in chemistry, biology and physics.
