Concern over rise in homeless

Homelessness, a problem once associated with cities, is on the increasein Pembrokeshire.

The situation is becoming so serious that a charity which fights homelessness is holding advice surgeries in the county.

Shelter Cymru is concerned that unless those in housing need seek support soon, they could find themselves in dire trouble this winter.

Rough sleepers and people living in temporary or emergency shelters fail to make arrangements for autumnal and winter conditions, says the charity.

There is also a growing problem with people living in poor or inadequate accommodation. They fail to carry out vital renovation work in the summer and suffer over the cold, wet winter months.

Huw Evans, of Shelter Cymru, said it is important people dont put off seeking advice or support.

The main problem appears to be apathy or whats known as the Pembrokeshire Promise," he said.

There are people throughout West Wales who are living in poor and inadequate housing."

Many are living in damp homes with dangerous electrical faults and leaking roofs.

Often, it is only when the damp, cold weather arrives that people consider their housing needs," added Mr Evans. He urged anyone with a housing problem to contact Shelter Cymru soon. Its confidential helpline - Shelterline - can be contacted on 0808 8004444.
