Rally on the road to classic success

A GLORIOUS sunny finish in Tenby on Sunday made up for a rather drizzly start in Milford Haven as the Western Telegraph Pembrokeshire Classic Vehicle Rally celebrated a fourth year of success.

Despite the elements, 130 classic cars and motorcycles assembled at Milford Marina, where they were welcomed by Pembrokeshire County Council vice-chairman, Councillor Leslie Raymond, and Milford Haven Deputy Mayor, Councillor K. Johnson.

The vehicles were flagged on their way on the 85 mile route by Western Telegraph editor and general manager, David Evans.

The vehicles were led off by Tavernspites Huw and James Adams beautifully restored 1958 BSA AA motorcycle and sidecar combination. They were flanked by Geraint and Daniel Phillips, of Pembroke, with their Messerschmitts.

Entries came from all over the country and included representatives from the Pembrokeshire MG Car Club, South Wales Kit Car Club and Milford Haven Classic and Vintage Car Club.

The oldest vehicles on the run were a 1923 Clement Talbot, driven by Joe Mayne, of Milford Haven, and a 1927 Model T Ford, driven by Keith Westwood, of Templeton.

It was not only the vehicles that bridged the age gap, but the drivers as well. The youngest driver on the run was Kate Gething-Lewis, still in her teens, while veteran driver Jack Holt, of Haverfordwest, would only confirm that he was over 21 and had been driving for over 70 years!

The first vehicle to arrive in Tenby was a 1966 MGD GT, owned by Lyn Salter and family, of Milford Haven.

All the vehicles finished the run and were awarded rosettes and certificates by Councillor Leslie Raymond and Jon Elliot, newspaper sales manager of the Western Telegraph.

Event organisers, Jeff and Sian Edwards, said: Due to ill health, the threat of foot and mouth and the weather, we didnt expect a big turn out this year. Everyone who turned up was a star.

Next years rally will be in honour of the Queens Golden Jubilee and will be held on September 1st.
