Carew get back to winning ways

Carew 4 Camrose 1

Carew got back to winning ways after a disappointing result against Tenby last Tuesday with a comprehensive victory over a weakened Camrose side on Saturday.

The scoreline suggests that this was a one sided affair but anyone watching the first half would never have predicted that victory would come by such a comfortable margin.

The blustery conditions made it difficult for both sides, but in truth the first 45 minutes produced a game that dull, tedious and devoid of any flair.

Neither side was able to break down each others defence although Carew had chances to score early on but Neil Morgan, who never stopped running throughout the game, shot over the bar and had another shot well saved by Camrose keeper Trevor Wright.

With both teams cluttering up the middle of the pitch thus not creating any space for the wingers to operate, it was difficult to see where the first goal was going to come from and the game needed something special to kick-start it into life and therefore banish the early season rustiness. That piece of magic finally came when Camroses Chris Owen struck an instinctive goal passed the diving Ian Kerrison in the Carew goal.

Camrose were awarded a free kick on the right wing and Gareth Williams produced a delightful cross that confused the Carew defence. In the resultant melee, Owen somehow hooked the ball into the top left hand corner of the net that gave Kerrison no chance.

This proved to be the catalyst for Carew to start playing football and they went close a couple of times before Richard Bullock finally equalised when Wright made a mistake and the Carew skipper was on hand to header the ball simply into the net.

Mercifully, for all those watching, the second half proved to be far more exciting. Carew, playing towards the clubhouse and against the wind started to be more creative with Tim Hicks, Tom Wright and Neil Morgan all proving to be a thorn in the Camrose side. Hicks was especially good going forward and caused the defence numerous problems with his speed and skill on the ball. However, it was central defender Gareth Lewis, who was a colossus in defence for Carew throughout the game, who had the first chance to get his side into the lead when his powerful header brought out a good save from Wright.

With Neil Morgan also going close it was only a matter of time before Carew scored again and the goal came courtesy of a neat finish from Hicks who controlled the ball well over the advancing keeper. Camrose were visibly tiring and Carew were coming at them in waves. Hicks had another opportunity to score but the shot was well saved, as was Adam Chandlers effort from 30 yards, although Carew did score from the resultant corner when Daryl John grabbed their third.

Tom Wright got the fourth with a precise finish near the end thus giving Manager Gerald Hicks cause to smile after the game.

Weve been awful so far. he said, Its nice to see us get some shape and stick to the task and hopefully we can move forward form here.
