Man loses leg after being hit by train

A 64-year-old Pembroke Dock man had his leg amputated after he was hit by a train in the tunnel between Pembroke and Pembroke Dock on Friday evening.

Eight people were on board the train when it struck Raymond Harrison in the quarter-mile long tunnel.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said the driver reported that Mr Harrison stepped out in front of the train at around 6.10 pm.

The driver raised the alarm and initially feared the man was dead.

Two fire crews from Pembroke Dock, an emergency tender from Haverfordwest, an ambulance, police and the British Transport Police attended the scene.

The emergency services used additional lighting to locate Mr Harrison in the tunnel, and the slippery ground also caused difficulties.

Once out of the tunnel, he was placed in a waiting ambulance and taken to Withybush Hospital.

A hospital spokesman said on Monday that Mr Harrison remains in a critical but stable condition.
