Local schemes receive millennium awards

Community schemes in Pembrokeshire are among many in Wales which have benefited from recent funds allocated by Arwain: WCVA Millenniumi Awards.

Arwain awards are for people whose ideas and energy can make a difference to communities with social, economic or environmental difficulties and limited access to services and facilities, said Dafydd Thomas, Arwain scheme manager.

The award winners might be working on vastly different schemes but they have one thing in common - the dynamism to set up things that will support local activity.

Arwain is made possible by joint funding from The Millennium Commission and the National Assembly of Wales.

The following Pembrokeshire-based projects have all received funding:

l Art in the Community was awarded £2,072 to organise art and craft days in the local galleries so that schools, community groups etc can visit and learn new creative skills. The project will benefit the community by involving - in the lifetime of the project - 300 people in art workshops. The aim of the art and craft days are to empower individuals by teaching them new skills and give them renewed pride by exhibiting their work locally l Strata Florida Past and Present, a project based in Pembrokeshire, was awarded £4,795 between two individuals to create a photo-documentary about the local anthropology and landscape. The area proposed for the project is divided between native residents and an influx of new people. It is hoped the wider community will benefit from the project because it will create a lasting archive of materials and raise awareness about the culture of rural settlements.

l Access IT Through Art was awarded £7,772 between four individuals to be split into providing the administrative, marketing, creative and technical skills needed to run and teach a series of Art/IT workshops. It is hoped that the workshops will help local people understand UF through the medium of art, providing them with new skills and a creative outlet.
