Carmarthen Quins 41 Whitland 0
Whitland suffered their heaviest defeat for some while as they lost their local derby against Carmarthen Quins by 41 points, 30 of them coming in a disappointing second period as they were beaten in the linesout and rarely were able to sustain any pressure. They conceded two tries while skipper Phil Morgan was sin-binned and there was really no way back after they had trailed by 11 points at the break.
The Quins opened the scoring with a penalty by Giles Thomas after a Barry Thomas kick had been dropped by Fakataha Molotiko and from the ensuing scrum Rob Phillips was shown the yellow card.
Whitland had a chance to level straight from the kick off after good work by Graig Richards and Molotiko but Daniel Griffiths was off target - as was Giles Thomas for the Quins after a high tackle by Dai Ebsworth.
But the Quins added further points as a break by Thomas and kick ahead by Emyr Jones allowed centre Stuart Jenkins to score a try.
Thomas missed the conversion but soon added a penalty and Whitland were forced to replace Steve Gerrard at hooker with Richard Emms.
The Borderers started the second period a little better but Griffiths missed a penalty in the seventh minute.
Opposite number Thomas was also off target but quickly made amends with a penalty before helping set up a good try for Warren Leach, who came in off his wing to find space on the opposite flank for an unconverted try.
Thomas added a further three points and Emyr Jones crossed for a try to finally bury Whitland hopes of a fight-back - and there were further tries by centre Darren Simpson in the 71st minute and replacement Paul Morgan near the end.
Both were converted by Giles Thomas to complete a resounding win for the Quins, leaving the Borderers without a league point after their first two matches.
Tonight, Wednesday, the Borderers entertain Llandovery in a league fixture at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn, while Saturday sees them take on Treorchy (away).
A supporters bus has been arranged and those who would like to travel should pay Iona, of Gog Sports, as soon as possible to ensure a seat.
