A REMARKABLE gentleman who is one of Britains last Great War veterans celebrated his 105th birthday yesterday (Tuesday).
Mr Alfred Finnigan feels he would be ambitious to survive long enough to claim the distinction of the countrys oldest resident.
But as he enjoyed a piece of birthday cake at his home in Llanglydwen, near Efailwen, he was happy to reflect on the strong constitution and excellent care that has helped him live to such a marvellous age.
Ive been very lucky to have nothing seriously wrong with me - although in latter years I have had the usual infirmities of age, he admitted.
Much to Mr Finnigans regret, his eyesight is not as good as it was. Until some 18 months ago, he was a voracious reader, particularly enjoying books on astronomy and mathematics and - following his travels by sea to Russia and Australia as a young man - navigation.
I was in the middle of a book on conic sections when I found I couldnt read any more, which is a great shame, he said.
He lives with his niece and nephew, Kathy and Colin Page, who are delighted that Uncle Alfred has reached such a momentous birthday - particularly as this time last year, he was unwell and in a nursing home.
One of Mr and Mrs Pages family of 30 dogs, Yorkshire terrier Benny, is the constant companion of Mr Finnigan, who throughout his life has been a great animal lover.
He is particularly fond of horses for a poignant reason, as in the First World War he was the lead driver in a Royal Artillery gun team. Amazingly, his only injury in the terrible conflict was from a bite from a horse.
The Legion dHonneur medal and a citation, awarded to him 80 years after the end of the war by the French Government, are now among his most treasured possessions. I feel it is a very considerable honour, he said.
A quiet birthday with family and friends was planned for Mr Finnigan yesterday - and they too felt honoured to be able to join him on this special occasion.
