As students return to universities and colleges across the country, British Gas is urging them and their parents to be aware of the hidden dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Students moving to rented accommodation need to be aware of how to protect themselves from this so-called Silent killer. As a responsible energy supplier, British Gas is offering the following advice:
l Ensure rented property has an up to date Gas Appliance Safety Certificate. By law all landlords must provide this. The certificate provides a record that all the gas appliances in the property have received an annual safety check.
l Be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and its symptoms.
l Install a kite-marked audible British Standard BS7860 approved CO detector. However, this is not a substitute for the regular servicing of appliances, but can act as a second line of defence.
