County councillors claim over 3475,000 in allowances

PEMBROKESHIRE County Council's 60 councillors claimed a total of over £475,000 in allowances last financial year.

The figures, from the council's financial report, compare with £277,000 claimed in 1999/2000 when the Welsh Assembly recommended an increase in allowances paid to councillors.

This means councillors each claimed an average of £4,616 in 1999/2000. But in 2000/2001, the average claim shot up to £7,916 - almost double.

The basic allowance for all council members is now £5,325 per annum. Councillors are also able to claim expenses on top of that, for food, use of the telephone, and travelling. Receipts must be presented for food expenses, and use of the telephone, and travelling expenses are reimbursed at current national rates.

There are also 'special responsibility' and 'civic responsibility' allowances. 'Special responsibility' allowances apply to the leader of the council (£13,505), deputy leader of the council (£6,658), leader of the largest minority group (£2,283) and leader of other minority groups (£761).

'Civic responsibility' applies to the chairman of the council (£7,000) and the vice-chairman (£3,500).
