Quins celebrate first win

Pembroke Dock Quins 29 Cwmgors 22

The huge smiles of relief on the faces of Quins coach Lennie Scourfield and his team manager/brother Roy at the end of the Black and Whites home match with Cwmgors told its own story as they joined the players in celebrating a league win after nine successive defeats.

The Quins have suffered from a lengthy injury list and non-availability of players through work - but Mark Bradney made a welcome return in this fixture and others of the calibre of Jason Griffiths, Lee Rogers, Rob Evans and Steve Hall will soon be on their way back to boost the overall strength of the Quins squad.

Coach Scourfield had told Telegraph Sport in midweek that he was confident his team would break their duck against Cwmgors and the Quins were boosted from the outset through a first-minute seven pointer as winger Phil James pounced to intercept a floated pass and scamper to the posts for a gift try which Gareth Scourfield converted.

But the Quins showed true festive spirit as they lost possession and Cwmgors capitalised with a try for full back Darren Rees which Kevin Windsor converted to tie things up after nine minutes.

The Quins regained the initiative as a good move involving Ian Osborne, Clark James and Lloyd Stephens took play into the visitors 22 and Mike Scourfield did well to take a short pass from scrum half Steve Davies to break the tackle and crash over for a try which younger brother Gareth again converted with his trusty left foot.

But again the Quins gave away a try almost immediately when Darren Rees cleaved through for his second try, Windsor converting.

The Quins lost flanker Neil Harries with suspected concussion and in a game where fortunes ebbed and flowed the Quins took a 21-14 lead into half time as Roy Davies came on instead and played at full back, with Bradney switching to the back row, Davies showing what he thought of being rested as he sped away on the blind side for Gareth Scourfield to again add the extras.

The Quins stiffened their defence as Gareth Lewis, Darren Gibby and Nigel Edwards defended well and the Quins enjoyed an advantage in the scrums as Gary Burns and Osborne worked hard, but they lost a couple of chances as referee Reg Jones decided players had been held up over the line.

But with Anthony Lay grafting alongside Stephens to set up a scrum five from which Mike Scourfield was credited with his second try from the successful pushover attempt. Gareth Scourfield missed the conversion but added a penalty after Windsor had claimed three points for Cwmgors.

It left the Quins with a 26-17 lead as the game entered its dying throes, only for Cwmgors to score when quick hands released winger Andrew Davies for an unconverted try.

It was a disappointment for the Quins but with the final whistle following from Reg Jones soon afterwards it didnt matter because the Quins were able to enjoy the sweet taste of three league points for the first time this campaign.

lThe Quins are due to play St Davids at Pembrokes Crickmarren Ground tonight (Wednesday) in the Classic Kitchens KO Cup and hope to entertain Burry Port on Saturday in a rearranged league fixture.
