Milford United 2 Merlins Bridge 1
Milford United gained their sixth win of the season on Saturday as they disposed of visitors Merlins Bridge by the odd goal in three.
Conditions didnt allow for a game of flowing football, but both sides knuckled down to the difficult task of playing on such a sticky pitch and produced a reasonable game for the spectators.
The home side played with the wind in the first half and they made the most of it as they pressurised the visitors to such an extent, that it was surprising that they failed to score more than one goal.
They were quicker to the ball, looked to off load it more and worked their way into good positions to create chances at goal.
The first chance fell to Adrian Roberts who saw his shot from distance sail harmlessly over the bar. Soon after, former Hakin player Joff Lennon, produced a good left footed shot that slammed frustratingly into the side netting.
Tom Carrington, looking lively and hungry for the ball on the left, showed a couple of nice touches and his cross cum shot forced a save out of visiting keeper Gwyn Thomas.
At this stage of the game all the Bridge could do was hustle the home side in defence. The pressure was bound to tell and Milford took the lead after Leighton Edwards produced a cross from the left, that found Steve Thompsons knee and the visiting manager could do nothing more than watch aghast as the ball went into the back of the net.
It was a fortuitous, yet deserved goal as Milford were playing the better football, but the highlight of the first half was Carl Masons twist, turn, and off-load in mid field that forced a corner for the visitors.
Nevertheless, the corner came to nothing and the score remained at 1-0 going into the interval.
Milford extended their lead soon after the break when Martin Mathias headed in an Edwards corner but the Bridge were in no mood to surrender and they came back with chances of their own.
Peter Jones, Nathan Thomas and Kevin Phillips all went close but to no avail while at the other end of the pitch Nick Jones forced a good save from Thomas with a powerful shot.
Merlins Bridge did pull one back mid way through the half when Mason latched on to a Sean Jones corner, but Peter Joness thunderous shot that shook the crossbar apart, they didnt pressurise the home side enough and Milford hung on for the win.
