Pembroke by-pass gets Assembly nod

PEMBROKE town centre is to be relieved of heavy goods vehicles under plans for a new Moatway around the town.

Assembly transport minister Sue Essex announced the £6.5m project was to receive £105,000 next year for design and feasibility studies as part of the annual transport grant allocations to local authorities.

She said: The Pembroke scheme will take out heavy traffic. The lorries dont want to go through the town centre, shop keepers dont want them coming through and neither do shoppers. If we can get that traffic out then the centre can start to flourish.

Ms Essex has been impressed with the wider benefits of the project, which has won its grants under a new programme for transport schemes that boost regeneration.

This scheme will greatly enhance the town and, includes cycle and pedestrian routes.

Although projected to cost £6.5 million, officials at the Assembly admitted expenditure could go higher.

There are environmental issues they will need to address to secure planning permission. The cost may well go up, said an official.
