County tucks in to a farmhouse breakfast

A CAMPAIGN to re-aquaint Pembrokeshire families with the delights of breakfast is underway this week.

Figures suggest that nearly half the population regularly skips breakfast, but the Home Grown Cereals Association and Womens Food and Farming Union are on course to buck that trend.

Pembrokeshire County Council is also playing a key role in luring people back to the breakfast table while promoting the regions high-quality produce.

Farmhouse Breakfast Week was officially launched on Monday, but Pembrokeshire couldnt wait to get started.

On Friday it was bacon, eggs and sausages all round at the Wimpy restaurant, Haverfordwest, an all-day breakfast staged to coincide with the Farmers Market.

The bacon had been cured locally, the sausages were home-produced and the free range eggs were complemented by locally-baked bread. These, together with the Pembrokeshire honey and preserves, were all available to buy at the nearby Farmers Market.

Children are also being encouraged to take part. Pupils at Hubberston VC and Johnston CP Schools have been making their own muesli and fruit smoothies, with the help of the chairwoman of the Pembrokeshire Womens Food and Farming Union, Beatrice Wellings.

Tomorrow (Thursday), three businesses will be competing to produce the Best Pembrokeshire Breakfast. The Wolfe Inn, Wolfscastle; Warpool Court Hotel, St Davids, and Maesyllan Country House Bed and Breakfast, Boncath, will be preparing their entries at Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest.

All these events are aimed at getting more people to eat breakfast. Statistics show that if everyone in the UK all ate an extra breakfast each month for a year, an additional 350,000 tonnes of cereals would be used.
