Pembrokeshire County Councillors have welcomed new speed limits on the A40 and A477 - but say road improvements must remain the priority. The National Assembly has recommended new limits at Milton, Llanteg, Letterston, Pembroke Dock, and Haverfordwest.
Director of highways, Huw Roberts, welcomed the new measures, but has urged the assembly to get on with upgrading the A477 and dualling the A40.
He said: Increased traffic restriction, while providing modest improvements to road safety, increases the perception of difficult access to our prime towns and potential employment sites. The real answer is the general improvement and upgrading of the routes.
But Councillor Norman Parry said restrictions are vital.
The people of Milton have been begging for this for donkeys years and now you are trying to take this away. Road safety should be paramount. Road improvements will be no use to these people.
Mr Roberts stated again he welcomed the speed limits, but safety would be increased by dualling and upgrading the routes.
Councillor Clive Collins also welcomed the limits, but said businesses and the public already felt the A477 was restricted all the way to Kilgetty.
The new limits will be: On the A477 at Milton for 650-metres as part of the Sageston Redberth bypass; 50 mph at Llanteg, just west of Folly Cross for 1.5 miles; the A40 either side of the cross roads at Letterston; an advisory 40 mph limit on the A477 between Kingswood House and Eastern Avenue on the approach to Pembroke Dock; an advisory speed limit on the A40 Narberth Road, Haverfordwest from the property Ceithin to the existing 30 mph signs at Cartlett Road.
Advisory limits are recommended speed limits, and not statutory limits.
