A number of elephants feet have been discovered in Pembrokeshire. But wildlife lovers need not worry - its only the name for a new kind of road marking.
Eagle-eyed motorists, cyclists and pedestrians may have already noticed the new crossing markings in a number of locations. They are white squares painted on the road and are half the size of Give Way markings.
Elephants Feet, so called because of their size, are already in place at the Twy Cross roundabout at New Hedges, Bridge End Terrace, Pembroke, the Merlins Bridge roundabout, the entrance to County Hall in Haverfordwest, and at the crossings at either end of the cycle path by the towns multi-storey car park.
The new markings are for information only and do not change the priorities for any road user. However they are useful in acting as a guide across the road for cyclists and pedestrians and warning motorists of road crossings on the Celtic Trail - this areas section of the National Cycle Network - and some of the other well used cycle paths.
Said Pembrokeshire County Councils Road Safety Officer, John Gobbi: It is important that all the users of the paths, especially children, are aware that these bold new crossing points are only safe if care is taken to see that the road is clear before crossing.
