Monkton Swifts 0 Carew 1 Referee: Steve Williams.
Carew manager Gerald Hicks maintains that key defender Gareth Lewis could play a much higher standard of football if he wanted to and on Saturday he proved why.
He is not just a skillful player that possesses the priceless quality of time on the ball, he is able to swing a game by a piece of magic and with the scores tied in this intriguing clash, his Beckhamesque free kick from outside the box, was the decisive factor.
With a strong wind at their backs, Monkton Swifts could have put the game beyond doubt in the first half as they were all over the visitors. Barry Dilworth in particular had a number of chances to score, but he had an off day, which was highlighted when he powered a penalty kick over the bar after Martin James was fouled in the box by Barry Evans.
Carew came back more into the game after the break and although they didnt create as many chances as the Swifts, it was always felt that they could sneak a goal.
With about 15 minutes to go, Jeremy Morris, who made a huge difference since coming on as substitute, was felled outside the box and up stepped Lewis to take the points with a beautiful, curling free-kick that has to be a contender for goal of the season.
It knocked the stuffing from the home side and they were left cursing those missed chances in the first half as Carew walked away with the win.
