Council to crack down on illegal signs

PEMBROKESHIRE County Council is to crack down on unauthorised and illegal advertising signs and similar objects and obstructions on the public highway.

The move comes following an increased number of complaints from the public and demands for enforcement action to be taken.

Illegal signs and vehicles for sale on highway verges can distract motorists, obstruct maintenance operations and give visitors a poor impression of the county, said a council spokesman.

In addition, unauthorised signs and stalled-out goods for sale on footways can obstruct pedestrians wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Said the chairman of the councils highways and transportation committee, Councillor Brian Hall: It is important that the owners of illegal obstructions in the highway are aware that they can be responsible for causing accidents and liable for any resulting injuries and claims.

These problems have grown steadily over recent years and action is needed now in the interest of public safety and a tidy environment for our residents and visitors.

The authority will prosecute offenders, but initially the council is giving owners of illegal signs and obstructions, both in or adjoining the highway, the opportunity to remove them voluntarily.
