Bridge overhaul

A strengthening project taking place on the Cleddau Bridge from March 18th will cause only minimal disruption to traffic as the work will focus on the underside.

The project will last 40 weeks and will modify the bridge to conform to modern design requirements. It follows last years successful programme of strengthening the bridges six main supporting columns. The Cleddau Bridge, a continuous steel box girder with an overall span of 820 metres, is now 30 years old.

The contract for the work has been awarded to Pembroke Dock-based engineering firm, Jenkins and Davies.

After completion of the work, the council plans to move forward next year with a complete resurfacing which will incorporate a change to the traffic-lane layout.

The structure recently won the Historic Bridge Award 2001 for work carried out under the councils direction.
