The Western Telegraph has a new editor

FIONA PHILLIPS has been appointed to lead the editorial team at the Western Telegraph, which is the best-selling weekly newspaper in Wales. The post includes editorship of the Milford Mercury.

Fiona, who is currently the newspapers Features Editor, has broad experience within the newspaper industry. She has served in almost every editorial role on the Western Telegraph since joining as a trainee reporter in 1980.

She was at one time the youngest woman editor in the country at a newly-launched Swansea free newspaper and now becomes the first woman editor in the history of the 148-year-old Western Telegraph. Fiona, aged 41, is married with a ten-year-old daughter and lives in Pembroke Dock. She is a governor of Pembroke Dock Community School, vice-chairman of the Pater Pantomime Society and a Trustee of Pembroke Dock Museum.

Fiona takes over from long-serving editor David Evans, who is General Manager of Newsquests recently-expanded West Wales centre. Its newspapers include the Western Telegraph, Cardigan & Tivyside Advertiser, Milford Mercury and South Wales Guardian.

David Evans commented: I am very proud to be passing on the editorship to someone who was trained on the Western Telegraph and has played an important role in its development.

Fiona is as passionate as I am about the Western Telegraphs role in Pembrokeshire and I know that with her in the editors chair the newspaper will be in good hands for the future. Fiona takes up the appointment on March 25th
