Teachers strike is last resort

Strike action by teachers in Pembrokeshire would be very much a last resort measure, according to union leaders.

A spokesman for the National Union of Teachers (NUT) in the county told the Western Telegraph: As far as we are concerned there are far more effective methods of determining what to do about our pay and conditions than going out on strike. Officers of the union will be seeking to address our problems with our employers rather than taking industrial action, which would be very much a last resort.

Nationally, the 220,000 strong NUT has balloted in favour of possible strike action in the autumn unless its demands for a 35-hour working week are met. The 200,000-member National Association of Schoolmasters and Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT), in conference in Scarborough last week, agreed to hold ballots on industrial action.
