PEMBROKESHIRES porpoise population appeared on cue at the latest porpoise watch held at Strumble Head on Easter Monday.
Over 150 people turned out for the event hosted jointly by PORP - the Pencaer Observation Recording Programme - and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.
The afternoon, which also included decorated egg and egg rolling competitions, was organised by Cliff Benson, of PORP, with marine biologist Mick Baines, National Park ranger Ian Meopham, voluntary wardens Malcolm Morris and Rick Spicer, and volunteers Freddy Jacob and Kate Hawkins.
Said Cliff Benson: There was a great turnout of both local people and visitors of all ages, making the day a wonderful success. The large tides brought the porpoises close to shore and they were visible on and off for over three hours.
We also saw lots of other wildlife, including Grey Seals, Gannets, Razorbills, Guillemots, Manx Shearwaters and a Red throated Diver.
After encouraging turnouts for all three porpoise watches held over the last year, it is now hoped that the porpoise watch will become an annual event, encouraging awareness of these wonderful creatures.
Prizes for the egg competitions were donated by the National Park, PORP, and IFAW, with the prizewinning decorated eggs displayed during Easter week at the Ocean Lab, Fishguard Harbour.
