Lowris awards are set in stone

Designer Lowri Davies has won the £4,000 commission to create four awards for the prestigious 2002 Menter Awards scheme, which will be awarded at this years National Eisteddfod in St Davids.

Originally from Aberyst-wyth, 23-year-old Lowri is now based in Cardiff and has built a notable portfolio since gaining a first class honours degree in ceramics at the Cardiff School of Art last year.

In 2001 she received an establishing grant from the Wales Arts Council and has exhibited her clay work in Cardiff, Swansea and London.

Said Lowri: Given that the National Eisteddfod is held in Pembrokeshire in 2002, I decided to focus on the idea of using stone as the inspiration for the awards.

This is a familiar image of the Pembrokeshire landscape, and I also feel that these type of stones convey strength and determination which will feature in the character of the competitions winners.

This is the fifth year of the Gwobrau Menter Awards scheme, which is organised annually by economic development company Menter a Busnes. The scheme is designed to reward Welsh speakers who succeed in business and companies that use and promote the Welsh language.

This years awards will be presented on the stage of the main pavilion at the National Eisteddfod in St Davids, on August 5th.

Of particular interest to Pembrokeshire is the special category for businesses located in the catchment area of the National Eisteddfod. There is an opportunity for anyone to put forward a nomination, and for full details and a nomination form contact Delyth Morris (awards co-ordinator) on 01269 844486 or e-mail 2/3 HYPERLINK mailto:
