Helicopter crew praised for cliff rescue courage

A WOMAN CLIMBER was seriously injured in a 100 foot fall down Crystal Slab, near St Govans Head, on Sunday.

Victoria Young, of Kingston-on-Thames, was climbing with two others when she fell.

One of them, a woman nurse, scrambled down to the injured climber to give her first aid, while a male climber raised the alarm.

Milford Haven Coastguard scrambled a rescue helicopter from RAF Chivenor and sent the Coastguard rescue team from St Govans.

The injured woman was then airlifted to Withybush Hospital and later transferred to Morriston Hospital.

The other woman climber was rescued from the scene by the Coastguard rescue team.

Milford Haven Coastguard watch manager, Keith John, praised the flying skills of the helicopter pilot.

The Coastguard rescue team reported to me from the scene just how expertly the helicopter crew had managed to get in close to the area where the woman needed to be winched from. Flying a helicopter close to the cliff edge demands great courage and skill, which ensured that this woman got the medical help she needed as soon as possible, he said.
