Ferry firms grant boost

Stena Line has been awarded a grant to greatly reduce the number of heavy lorry journeys on Pembrokeshire roads.

The ferry company has received a freight facilities grant of £334,074 to develop bunker storage facilities at Fishguard. The company will be able to store the fuel needed for its Fishguard-Rosslare crossings at the terminal, and fuel will be transported to the bunkers by sea.

National Assembly Minister for Environment Sue Essex said: At present, heavy road tankers are required to carry fuel to the ferries from the Texaco terminal at Pembroke. About five 28-mile return journeys are made each day.

The environmental benefits of moving freight to water and off Wales roads are clear, and I hope that other freight operators will follow suit.
