Army hits town on a mission to recruit

Welsh soldiers are preparing themselves for a visit to Haverfordwest on Tuesday, May 14th, when Regular Army soldiers serving with Welsh regiments staff display stands in the town centre.

Territorial Army soldiers serving with units that make up the Armys 160 Wales Brigade will also be present together with members of the Gwent Army Cadet Force.

The five Welsh Regiments are: 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Wales, currently on a six-month tour of duty to Kosovo; 1st Battalion The Royal Welch Fusiliers, who have just returned to the UK following an eight-week training exercise in Kenya; 1st Battalion The Welsh Guards, who have recently departed their Aldershot base for a six month tour of duty in Bosnia; The Welsh Cavalry - 1st The Queens Dragoon Guards, who are based at Catterick, north Yorkshire, and The Welsh Gunners - 22nd Regiment Royal Artillery based at Kirton in Lindsey, Lincolnshire. Of course, not all five of them are able to be present on the day.

Equipment, vehicles, weaponry and various types of kit will be on show to the public, with Welsh soldiers on hand to answer questions from the public and other interested parties.

Soldiers will also pay a visit to two schools in the area and will give demonstrations and hold discussions with pupils.

The visit to Haverfordwest forms part of Operation Bardic Crown, which is the brainchild of Brigadier Robert Aitken, Commander of the Armys 160 Wales Brigade,

Operation Bardic Crown aims to assist Regular and Territorial Army recruiting in Wales, to promote the Army as a force for good and to highlight the importance of Army training on private land in Wales.

I very much hope that the people of Haverfordwest will take this opportunity to meet their soldiers. The town and surrounding area has provided great support to the Regular and Territorial Army and the Cadet Force over many years, said Brigadier Aitken.
