Champions finish off on a high note

Narberth 54 Pencoed 27

Narberth celebrated their runaway winning of the Second Division championship with another points glut against Pencoed, a side they had already beaten 37-9 earlier in the season.

The Otters conceded an early try but were always in control afterwards - and when centre Elgan Vittle crossed for their sixth try it gave Keith Eatons team their 1,000 points for the campaign!

Leading the way as usual in amassing points was fly half Simon Daniels, who picked up 19 points before being receiving the Player of the Season award from the Otters Supporters Club in a post-match presentation in the stand where John Bowen and Hedd Davies received the respective awards for second team and youth team.

The Otters were clearly intent on running the ball from the outset but missed chances through over-eagerness - and Pencoed broke the stranglehold for hooker Tim Henson to race over on the left for an unconverted try.

But Narberth were soon in the groove as Gareth Bennett, skipper Simon Davies and Meurig Daniel were always in the thick of things while Puku and Rob Jones joined Kevin Davies in winning 50/50 ball.

Jamie Bohata crossed for a try after a long pass by the outstanding Chris MacDonald had put Wayne Jones into space.

Simon Daniel converted, as he did when Chris MacDonald did well to crash over at the posts, and when the fly half himself nipped over for the third try it was after good work by Andrew Bowen and Andrew Jones had established the platform.

MacDonald scored a brilliant second try to cap what has been a wonderful campaign for the scrum half, followed by a typical Puku burst for a try and that try by Vittle which gave the Otters their magic milestone, again all three tries goaled by Daniel.

Pencoed refused to give up though, and served up some attractive rugby of their own in which there were tries for Kevin Green and Huw Rees, with Gareth Davies notching a conversion to go with a drop goal from Huw Rees.

But with man of the match Kevin Davies, Bohata, Jason Jennings and MacDonald involved in all that the Otters did, they added a further brace of tries by full back Wayne Jones, the second created by John Whitticombe and converted by Daniel, with a Pencoed try from Mark Davies sandwiched in between.

Gareth Davies slotted the extras but Narberth were easy winners to give them their 23rd win in 30 matches - and the players and coaching staff deserve a huge pat on the back for the tremendous rugby they have dished up for their delighted supporters this season.
