Wood Wins it for Carew

Llangwm (200 for 7) lost to Carew (201 for 3) Umpires: Hilliard Davies and John Williams

Carew finally started their league programme in earnest with a good win at Pill Parks against a Llangwm side which batted well to reach the 200 mark in their allotted 45 overs - but then new recruit Simon Wood led the Carew batting with a top score 84 to take them to victory for the loss of only three wickets.

Llangwms opening pair of William Beresford and Ian Gow gave them an excellent start with a stand of 137 before spinner John Canton joined the fray and had Beresford caught by James Owen for a fine 83 that included 12 fours and a six and was made from 110 deliveries.

Canton then removed Mark Davies, Andrew Harries and Gary Phillips for next to nothing - and Gow for a gritty 49 by the time the total had reached 162.

But George Thomas showed what he still has to offer with an unbeaten 28 which steered the homesters to 200 runs, with Rob Scourfield picking up 2 for 54 and Canton 5 for 53.

Carew lost Ian Sefton early on to Martyn Inward but Nick Scourfield was joined by Simon Wood in a stand of 124 before both fell to Henry Thomas with the assistance of good catches by his brother George.

Wood had 14 fours and a six in his 84 and like Beresford faced 110 balls, with Scourfield contributing an important 40 runs.

Their batting nicely set the stage for Wes Cole (26) and Barry Ansell (28) to apply the coup de grace as they reached 201 for 3 with 15 deliveries to spare from an entertaining game that was played in a very good spirit.
