Phelps powers Hook at Treleet

Hooks talented opening batsman Jamie Phelps defied the adverse weather conditions at Treleet to score the bulk of his teams runs against Pembroke, but the visitors hopes of a second successive victory were ruined as they were unable to shift the late Pembroke batsmen and had to settle for a draw points.

Phelps was re-joined by Mick Haltam as the Hook opening pair and the latter marked his return to action with a solid 32 before he was removed by Pembrokes teenage prospect Jonathan Hyde.

His demise saw a traditional Hook batting collapse that started with Martin Rowlands being run out for a single and Nick Absolom bowled by Nigel Phillips without troubling the scorers.

It was the start of a great spell for veteran off-spinner Phillips in which he grabbed six wickets and not one single Hook batsman managed double figures alongside Phelps as Hook were dismissed for 152 in 42.5 overs. Fortunately for them, Phelps scored 82 priceless runs, including two sixes and eight fours before he was finally dismissed late on.

Pembroke made a steady start in response as Matthew Mitchell and Barry Evans scored 19 and 22 respectively.

But then Gary Martin and Andrew Thomas struck alongside Sion Jenkins and it became Pembrokes turn to struggle as key run-gatherers Craig Nutty and Mark Fraser went early.

Paul White grafted for an unbeaten 14 and there were double figures from Martin Fletcher and skipper Gwyn Griffiths but with Andrew Thomas grabbing 4 for 23 and Gary Martin 2 for 11 in 12 overs it was a relieved Pembroke who saw the final ball delivered with them holding out for the draw.
