Missing mans body found in sea

A 36-hour search for a man missing from Manorbier ended with the discovery of his body on a Tenby beach early on Friday morning.

Retired civil servant John Sharland, who had been visiting family in the area from his home in London, was last seen at 7 pm on the Wednesday evening.

His family became concerned for his safety and he was reported missing on Thursday afternoon.

An extensive search involving the Dyfed-Powys Police helicopter, police dog handlers, coastguards and police officers was launched, concentrating on the area around the coastal path at Manorbier.

It was an off-duty coastguard who had been involved in the search the previous day who first sighted 60-year-old Mr Sharlands body.

He was walking his dog along the Esplanade when, at 6.24 am, he spotted the body on the South Beach, to the left of the slipway path.

Mr Sharland, who has a cousin and sister-in-law in Manorbier, was a native of the village, but had lived away since he was 16. However, he was a frequent visitor for extended stays with his family and had arrived for this holiday the previous Sunday before his tragic death.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, but would like to hear from anyone who saw Mr Sharland after 7 pm last Wednesday, May 22nd.

He is described as stockily-built with grey hair, 5 7 tall and with a gold tooth.

Anyone who can help the enquiry is asked to contact Tenby Police Station on (01834) 842303.
