Burton bag second round place

Burton (112 for 3) beat Maenclochog (110 for 5)

Umpires: Hilliard Davies and Trefor Evans Scorer: Stuart Sharpe

Burton defied the awful mid-week weather to become the only side to progress into the second round in a very wet week as they did supremely well to have their Oatfield Park ready for action for their tie against Maenclochog.

That the wicket was playable was evidenced by the fact that both teams scored at five runs an over as Maenclochog set off with 110 for five wickets, thanks to skipper Mike Howe and Narberth rugby star Jamie Bohata, who showed what a good eye he has by opening his shoulders to launch three huge sixes in his unbeaten 25, one as big as most seen at the ground as it flew out of sight into a neighbouring garden.

Fortunately for Burton, they managed to get rid of Howe for a classy 53 as he was run out by Johnnie Griffiths just before the end of the allotted overs, with six fours in his half century.

They were even luckier that Bohata didnt have any longer at the crease as the big rugby second row opened his shoulders so that the normally economic Steve Jones was summarily despatched for 23 in only two overs and Johnnie Scale conceded 25 runs in his five overs after Chris Murray had looked the pick of the home bowlers with a splendid 2 for 11 in his six overs, including two maidens.

Burton lost opener Richard Hayman with the score on 14, run out by a good throw from Rupert Sykes - but Gareth Virgo and Oliver Shelldrake redressed the balance in a stand of 80 where they ran well together and took boundaries off the odd bad ball.

Shelldrake reached 33 (three fours) before he was well caught by Richard Howells off the bowling of Rupert Sykes.

Virgo has been unable to play on Saturdays because he has been working but the Milford School student showed his potential as he reached 48 (seven fours) to put Burton in sight of a win.

But then he lofted a catch to Sykes off Andrew Davies, Virgo was just short of what would have been a deserved half century, and it was left to David Murphy and skipper Chris Campbell to nudge Burton to victory - and they must now wait to see if they play either Llangwm or Cresselly in the second round.
