Whitland hold on for a draw

Haverfordwest maintained their unbeaten run at the top of the table with the better of the draw against Whitland, but they rarely looked likely to bowl out the opposition after scoring 179 for 7 and then restricting the oppositions flow of runs early on.

It was always going to be a difficult task for The Town after they had lost the toss but skipper Jonathan Twigg maintained his run glut with another fine knock of 65, which included four fours, before he caught by Colin John off Rhydian Harries having taken his tally to 416 runs and a current league batting average of almost 139!

Runs werent easy to come by on a damp Racecourse pitch but the hard work put in by Rob Summons, Arthur Chapman and Co meant that it gradually settled and Twigg was joined by Andrew Phillips (14) and Phil Kirkby in advancing the score.

Kirkby hit four fours and a six to reach 50 off 68 balls but he was out from the next delivery by Paul Webb, who took a good return catch.

Webb ((3 for 40) and Mark Lee (2 for 21 in 12 controlled overs) made sure that The Town never ran away with things and Harries chipped in with 2 for 36 as Haverfordwest used up their allotted 45 overs in reaching 179 for 7. Tight bowling by Paul Thomas and Adrian Griffiths meant that Haverfordwest kept a tight lid on the Whitland run rate and they picked up respective figures of 2 for 24 and 2 for 16 as they shared 21 overs - but Webb batted steadily for his 30 as wickets fell at the other end.

Colin John also reached double figures and 18 from Mark Lee meant that Whitland held on at 111 for 7 - but Haverfordwest extended their lead at the top since Carew suffered defeat at Lamphey and Hook were inactive because of Kilgettys demise.
