JUBILATION!

Pembrokeshire commemorated the Queens Golden Jubilee in style at the weekend with a colourful mix of celebrations ranging from the traditional to the modern.

Street parties reminiscent of Jubilees past were enjoyed by many communities. And throughout the county there were carnivals, fancy dress parades, sports, old style music halls, Stars in Your Eyes competitions, regattas, fishing competitions, fetes, flower festivals, duck races, sandcastle competitions, treasure hunts, Jubilee mug presentations, childrens workshops, history exhibitions, tea dances discos, coffee mornings, strawberry teas, picnics, barbecues and pig roasts. Evenings rounded off with the lighting of Jubilee beacons and fantastic firework displays.

Some celebrations lasted only one day, others will stretch over a week. Schools, eager not to miss out, held their own festivities before they broke up for half-term holidays. Some released hundreds of red, white and blue balloons while Monkton School, Pembroke, held its own special Coronation.

Even the weather was kind. Saturday saw a glorious day of sunshine. A fierce thunderstorm on Sunday failed to dampen spirits and rain kept away for most of Mondays many afternoon street parties.

But organisers of Milford Havens Jubilee Carnival were in for disappointment.

They had arranged to continue the celebrations with an evening of family entertainment at the Marble Hall Football Ground. But only four days before the event their plans were scuppered when they were told they did not have the necessary public entertainment licence.

With the county council refusing to budge, new homes had to be found for the two main attractions. Live music went to the Lord Nelson Hotel and the fireworks display was staged at Milford Marina.
