A driver of an army tank transporter which suffered a suspected brake failure as he headed towards a busy junction at the bottom of a hill, has been praised for taking brave evasive action.
The tanks of the Royal Logistical Corps were leaving Castlemartin Camp for Hampshire in convoy on Monday morning.
But it is thought the brakes of the lead transporter failed as the convoy drove down St Daniels Hill, Pembroke at around 9.30 am.
The driver sounded his horn to warn drivers to move out of the way and then opted to veer off the road into a hedge. A tree took the full impact of the transporter on the drivers side.
It was suspected that the driver had broken a leg, but the driver, and co-driver, were later discharged from hospital.
The Royal Logistical Corps are leaving Castlemartin in stages after two weeks at the camp.
Colonel Rogers, said: The driver deserves full marks for preventing what could have been an horrific accident. It was a brave decision to take.
A police spokesman said: The driver acted in a responsible and professional manner in avoiding possible injury to members of the public by diverting the vehicle into a nearside hedge.
