Major bid to transform towns historic quays

AMBITIOUS proposals to redevelop Pembrokes North and South Quays have been unveiled.

The plans, which are backed by the Welsh Development Agency, include the town mill being rebuilt to house a town museum. The museum could include equipment from the pioneering cinema family, the Haggars. A timber boardwalk and viewing platform will be created around the Castle Pond.

A second museum - the National Heritage Maritime Museum - could be built on the North Quay. In the proposals it would be surrounded by art galleries and workshops.

Plans for the South Quay include a restaurant and bar, viewing platforms and craft units.

A small hotel could be created in Castle Terrace which would lead on to a landscaped garden area adjacent to the restored town wall. The plans include a new landscaped path from Northgate Street to the quay. Pembroke town councillors welcomed the proposals at a meeting last week.

Councillor Wyn Jenkins said: We have been talking about this since 1984 and this is as good a proposal as any. Lets just say get on and build it, instead of constantly talking about it.
