Wood on form in local derby

Cresselly (135 all out) lost to Carew (136 for 5) Umpires: Hilliard Davies and Trefor Evans Scorers: Dave Richards and Martyn Cole

Another useful all-round display by Simon Wood helped Carew maintain their challenge for honours at the expense of neighbours Cresselly, whose final tally owed much to their late-order batsmen Mark Harries, Simon Hart and Steve Jenkins, who came in last and belted a four and six to take his team to an extra batting point.

Wood claimed a wicket brace and then top-scored with 63 as Carew overcame an early batting collapse which saw them limp to 53 for 4 before another former Kilgetty star in Phil Jones helped him put on 75 runs in good time to see Carew home with 11 overs to spare.

Darren Thomas made early inroads into the Cresselly batting order after home skipper Richard Harris had won the toss and elected to bat, removing Julian Arthur and Phil Williams to leave them struggling on 15 for 2.

Thomas finished with 3 for 20 in 12 overs (five maidens) as he had Damian Arthur caught by Ian Sefton in the covers for a top score of 25, with a six and three fours before he fell at 46.

Then Steve Ive and Rob Scourfield took over the attack and claimed three wickets apiece as only Paul Luke, Richard and Mark Harris managed double figures.

Simon Wood returned to shift James Caine and after Boxer Jenkins had scored a speedy 16 Wood struck again to have Hart caught close in by Phil Jones with the total on 135.

Carew also made a disappointing start when they lost openers Sefton and Nick Scourfield by the time they had 21 on the board.

Steve Cole and Brian Hall also went relatively cheaply but Wood was quietly accumulating runs, as he does so well, getting out just eight runs short of victory with ten boundaries in his 63 - and Jones was at his belligerent best in rapping six fours en route to 36 not out.

Aled Davies was with Jones at the finish and Carew were delighted with their 29 points - and a chance of practice in readiness for their next visit to the same ground in another two weeks time.
